History The
Abelian Group was founded in 1981 as a resource for adults who needed
to learn mathematics but who, for various reasons, didn’t want to sit
in a classroom again. We soon found that our approach-- building
understanding from basic principles, and wrapping that in history-- worked well not only with adults, but with essentially everybody old
enough to think abstractly.
We
have worked effectively with the entire spectrum of learners: from
those labeled Learning Disabled, through the bored student who is
looking for more challenge, to the adult wanting to get into an MBA
program, to the retired engineer who wants to do calculus just for the
fun of it.
Our approach seems to
grease the skids: new
students routinely go from basic arithmetic (fourth grade math) to the
mastery of algebra in six months or so. One adult student went from
rusty arithmetic to the door of calculus in one (very busy) summer.
