Leslie Bryan, founder and director of The Abelian Group, graduated from Bakersfield High School then studied physics at Bakersfield College. She received her BA in mathematics from UC Berkeley, minoring in physics and music. She began her math-teaching career at Richmond High, teaching for two years while her husband finished his graduate work at U.C. Berkeley. After a year of world travel they moved to Massachusetts, where they raised two daughters.
In Massachusetts, Leslie worked as a systems analyst for The MITRE Corporation, where she did comparative economic analyses of power generating facilities and designed a program for bringing New England’s vast network of low-head hydro installations onto the electric grid. She returned to Berkeley in 1978, teaching for many years in the math department at San Francisco State University. Along the way she earned an M.A. in clinical and educational psychology at JFKU, and founded The Abelian Group Math School. She finds the two disciplines of teaching and psychology to be quite complementary.
After a gratifying teaching career in Berkeley, she returned to Bakersfield friends and family to, well, work less.
She is a musician by avocation, playing cello at every opportunity.
